Local Otaku Love (LOL)

In Japan, “cosplay” as a hobby is usually an end unto itself. Like-minded people gather to see others’ costumes, show off their own elaborate handmade creations, take lots of pictures, and possibly participate in best costume contests. , taken : Wiki
How many in Singapore really thinks than being an Otaku like myself or Cosplay is really about passion? Well i would guess not many, probably a handful thinks such silly acts of boredom and adolescence is just to attract more attention to the un-loved clouded mind.
Well, you’re probably right in a way. anyone that does anything wants attention no matter how big of a profile your activity gets. Just take alook at blogging, it all started as a personal inputs now and then and probably sometime later down the road you happen to stumble back at it again and laugh at how pathetic you were when you were younger. What has blogging become now? Major, as in BIG, BIG! BIG!!. A good example would be Otakurean? Monthly Feature
So what i’m trying to say is, Cosplay and being an otaku in general isn’t really always about attention, yes we do collect useless stuff (beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder) and yes we spent too much of our life on the net doing God Knows what. *ok my bad i couldn’t control my Haruhism*
Without further delays, i’m going to rant about the Local Otaku Love , LOL in short. but do notice the time, is already 110am (local time) and yes i have work tomorrow(in fact 6hours) and needs to wake up at 7am.
I guess, probably most of the anime watchers are not otaku. Probably just happen to liked a particular series, not even going to label them as fangirl/boy level though. casue’ they ain’t even at that level. They are just, Normal. In the midst of those “Normal”, there are few who opposes the rules and seeks to crave out a niche for themselves. So we have our Otakus, Cosplayers, Doujin works and photographers, the list goes on but i’m just going to stop it here.
Honestly, Cosplaying in Singapore have not been good i feel. overall quailty and feel of it ain’t quite there yet BUT we are having good starts here and there. With more regulars cosplaying and more “Normal” coming in and feeding the merchandise frenzy, the Niches is getting more and more content.
I went around googling just to test my luck to see how far has this LOL become, and no i wasn’t that shocked but rather was i amazed,

Of course an almost one-stop, maybe a few click(s) on local cosplay can be found on 2 forums, namely SgCafe and SgCosplay

Also there are those that made the wears and knick-knacks for cosplayers, heres a link i happen to saw, and maybe her/his sales may increase due to this, LOL.
Then of course theres the photographers who takes photos of cosplays, whether or not they like it may not be important as it’s a good way to expand your portolio anyways. but of course here are some good ones,

Of course there are always good and bad in anything we do but theres more of bad(visaully) for the cosplay here but is improving as it ages, LOL will not be dissapointed this Cosfest 07 as i think it will be even better than last year.
that i’m actually ending this rather quickly as i really need the sleep but i will do up something related soon i guess. so to end off, if there was anything to even end off, LOL is really growing. Otakus better be prepared we are going mainstream. This may or may not be a good thing but if it does we will benefit in a way or we’ll just mugged like those in japan.
and yes, Fangirls are always welcome in a male dominant hobby and to do some fan service for you fangirls, heres some yaoi action from sasuke(s),

Finally, someone who appreciates otaku society. I think people are too quick to judge, and screw all you guys for being so closed minded about us! I think it is you all who need to get a life you freaky ‘normal’ people. Otaku and Lolita have lives that are MUCH greater than yours! We make life worth living!

I agree with RogueRiley. Otaku do not get the loving understanding we deserve. And people wonder why we are recluses.
You all need to understand that it is not about the dressing up or acting like crazy fans, it is about the love and compassion we have for one another and a way to band with people with the same interests.
I think for you ‘normal’ people, you guys are afraid of us. People fear what they dont understand.
Your ideas of thinking you are better than us just because you are afraid to dress differently doesnt make you cool. It makes you immature. You laugh at what is different.
It seems, that the different ones, ARE the mature ones.

PS: I’m a dude…And I love yaoi! It has more substance than yuri does. SasukexSasuke is great.

Ermm, ‘You’. Jesuke’s a girl? And yea. I agree with him. Many a times where people have said we have no life and all. Well they all just get a thrashing from me.
I’ve been cosplaying for about coming to three years in singapore and apparently we’re getting better every year. Good to see new people even though some of them are bad, but well, they will improve!
Let’s see the people who call us no life to get their own costumes and teams and all.
